This Privacy Policy applies to https://www.lachance.org (hereinafter, "I", "me" “us”, “we”, "Website" or “lachance.org”). The term "you" will refer to any person viewing the website content using the URL lachance.org.
This Website is offered subject to your acceptance without modification of all of the terms and conditions contained herein and all other operating rules, policies (including, without limitation, lachance.org ‘Terms of Use’, incorporated by reference within this ‘Privacy Policy’).
PERSONAL STATEMENT
I respect your privacy and am committed to protecting personally identifiable information you may provide me through the Website. I have adopted this privacy policy ('Privacy Policy') to explain what information may be collected on this Website, how I use this information, and under what circumstances (if any) I may disclose the information to third parties. This Privacy Policy applies only to information collected through the Website and does not apply to collection of information used on this Website that has been obtained from other sources.
BASIS FOR USE
As the author and publisher of this website, I consider the privacy of visitors to be extremely important.
The primary objective in genealogy is to identify all ancestors and descendants in a particular family tree and to collect personal data on them. As a minimum, this data includes the individual's name and the date/location of birth, marriage, and death. In order to support research by other genealogists, this data is often published on internet genealogy websites.
As a genealogist, therefore, I may have collected much personal information on your family from a variety of sources. The privacy of this information is important to me and I assure you there is a privacy policy in place for this Website with which you will be satisfied.
Most of us would prefer not to have to worry about our personal data but, in this day and age, we must use caution to prevent misuse of the information. Identity theft and credit fraud are the worst problems. There is concern that information distributed to distant relatives or put on a genealogy website makes it easier for unscrupulous individuals to commit invasions of privacy or other frauds.
However, the personal information that the identity thieves and credit fraud perpetrators want are full names, social security numbers, dates and places of birth, current occupation/employment data, and bank/credit card account numbers. One or two facts alone (e.g., your name and/or your mother’s maiden name) are not enough information to cause damage.
with thanks to Ken Roy of Our Acadian, French Canadian and Maine Ancestors at https://www.royandboucher.com/ for this 'Basis for Use'.
NAMES AND RELATIONSHIPS
Most genealogy programs today, including the software I use locally and online, are able to suppress the names of living individuals and substitute "living" or "still living". I have made a careful attempt to ensure that names of living individual are suppressed. Sometimes this is not possible, for instance, names taken from obituary notices or other news content. If you are aware that someone is living and their full name is shown here, please let me know, so I can remedy the situation. Please note that for the software I am using to compile my database, it is a date of birth (at least an aproximate year) that renders an individual as "living".
PERSONAL DATA ACCESS
NOTE: ONLY INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE REGISTERED WITH THIS SITE, PROVEN TO BE A LEGITIMATE FAMILY MEMBER AND ARE SECURELY LOGGED IN TO THE SITE DATABASE WILL BE ABLE TO VIEW INFORMATION ON LIVING INDIVIDUALS.
Personal data access is restricted to registered family members who must login to access the normally suppressed personal data of living individuals. At the discretion of the site owner (Larry Lachance), access may be restricted to their own family branch only. Any individual who desires to register must first read the Privacy Policy, agree with the Terms of Use, and then, register for a user account. When registering for a user account, you must demonstrate a direct connection to a grand-parent, great-grand-parent, or great-great-great-grandparent or other direct relationship within our family tree. If you are not related, you will not normally be granted a user account except under mitigating circumstances. In this case, a temporary or time-limited account MAY be made available at the discretion of the site owner.
With registration and after approval, you will be granted access to the lachance.org database. You may submit conditional edits, which I will update on my personal computer database which is used to populate the website.
PERSONAL DATA SECURITY
Original data given to me in trust (personal information, e-mail/street addresses, phone numbers, etc.) is not provided to others unless your approval is first obtained. You should be aware, however, that most of this information is in the public domain and may be readily available to others using internet search engines (e.g., Yahoo People Search, Google.com, Birthday.com among many others).
